FAQs

Please note:

Bentleigh Lakers is a volunteer run Club, and relies on volunteers to fill all roles such as coaches, team managers, committee members and age group coordinators.

What happens after I register my child?

The Age Group Coordinator will collate all the registrations and based on his/her assessment of the player, will form teams and then allocate coaches. A New Player Session will be held for new Players to assist with this. The Club has a Selection Policy to:

  • Ensure the enjoyment of all players within the club – through equal participation.
  • Place players in teams appropriate to their current or future skill level and development.
  • Develop all players to the maximum of their ability.
  • Field competitive teams in all grades in each age group.

The Selection policy can be found under the Policies and Procedures tab

When will I find out what team my daughter/son is in?

Teams will be announced by email about 7 days before the season starts.

When will I find out who the coach is?

This will come out with the Team announcement. Please note that we rely on parents and current and ex-players to fill these volunteer roles as coaches.

When will I find out when training is?

Training is once a week on a weekday. The day/time/venue will be advised with the Team announcement. This can’t be advised any earlier because it is dependent upon the number of teams formed and coach/venue availability,

When will the matches be?

The Bentleigh Lakers participates in the domestic competition which is run by the McKinnon Basketball Association (MBA). Age groups will be played on the following days:

  • U8 boys and girls – Saturday mornings
  • U10 to U18 Boys – Saturdays
  • U20 Boys – Sundays
  • U10 to U20 & Open Girls – Sundays

Games commence with the youngest age group progressing to the older age groups at the end of the day.

The fixtures are determined by the MBA and game times will be released before the competition starts. Your team manager should also advise you on a weekly basis where and when games are.

What happens if I don’t get my uniform order in time?

There will be a cut-off date advised to all members when registrations open (see key dates on the top right of this page). If you order after the advised cut-off date, then players can wear a plain t-shirt and shorts without pockets/pockets taped for the first 4 rounds of the season without penalty.

How long does the Season run?

A normal season is generally 14 to 16 rounds long (excluding long weekends, school holidays & finals). Summer Season runs Terms 4 and 1. Winter Season runs Terms 2 and 3.

Will the teams change?

Teams can change in the first couple of weeks of the season as Age Group Coordinators assess players in a competition environment e.g. sometimes a player is nervous at the grading session and performs below their capability.

How can I get involved?

  • All parents are required to take their turn scoring or running the clock for matches. Your Team Manager should set up a schedule for the season.
  • You can volunteer to be Team Manager for your son/daughter’s team (easy role – advising parents game information each week, organising scoring roster, organising end of season celebration)
  • You can volunteer to be a Coach for a team. Coaches get concessional pricing on their children’s registration fees.
  • You can volunteer to be on the Club Committee. Committee members receive concessional pricing on their children’s fees.
  • You can volunteer to assist at any events we run

If you’re interested in being involved email the club at registerforlakers@gmail.com
